Email Rant

I love my blog. I can rant about what ever I want. And it doesn’t even matter if no one agrees with me.

So I’m going to rant now. Be warned that this rant is not directed at any particular person. But if you feel this applies to you, then well…there’s not much I can do about that. :-)

I use email. I actually have 3 email addresses. Two junk ones and one good one. I happen to like email. I find it incredibly handy. And it’s always fun to get messages from friends. I also like that you can talk to someone about something, and they can get to it when it’s convenient for them. Unlike picking up the telephone, which requires the person to drop what they are doing to address you that second. Which isn’t always a good thing. Hey, at least that’s how it is for me. Sometimes the phone rings and I really want to talk to so and so, but with all the kids screaming and running around I either can’t hear or I’m too busy. So I really like email. But I feel that there should be some rules for email. In fact, many people have listed some rules of emailing. I don’t necessarily agree with all of these rules. Sometimes email is a formal thing and sometimes not. But the thing that bothers me the most about email is people’s lack of response. You check your snail mail every day, right? And how often do you ever get anything good in your mail box? You usually get junk mail and bills, don’t you? And yet you walk out to the mail box every day and check the mail. Then what do you do with it? Does it pile up on the hall table? Do you throw out the junk right away? Do you deal the important stuff right away or at least file it?

Then there’s email. Do you check your primary email every day? Do you respond to emails promptly? Especially emails that ask questions or other wise require a response. It completely drives me nuts when I email someone with questions and I don’t hear back from them for a week or more. Or never. To me, this just says, “I’m ignoring you.” If you use email as a way to correspond with people then I feel you need to check your email and make responses daily. Unless you are some giant big wig, it is doubtful that you are getting hundreds of emails a day that require immediate responses. And face it folks, sending off an email usually only takes a minute or two. Are you such a busy person that you can’t spend 5 minutes a day taking care of your emails? And lets just say for a minute that you are a busy, important person. Then you have even more reasons to be checking your emails regularly. For instance, I recently emailed someone and I asked specific questions that needed responses. A week later…nothing. I realize that this particular person IS actually quite busy. He has a lot on his plate. But I still feel like this person (and everyone) should check their emails daily and respond as soon as possible. Even if you’re insanely busy, you can still make a response in a day or two. Putting off responses for 3 days or more is just ridiculous. If you’re that busy or you get THAT many emails then maybe you need to hire someone to help you answer them. Or maybe you shouldn’t be using email.

That’s my two cents. And I’m sticking to it. And don’t even get me started on folks who don’t reply to all when necessary. :-) ACK!!!

I remember that email. I remember thinking that I didn’t know what you were talking about. And since you didn’t ask me any questions and you didn’t say please respond, I just let it go.

I’m not killing you. Or anyone. I’m not perfect. Duh. I just think a lot of people use email irresponsibly.
