Here's the north - it's a shame that my city placement leaves me unable to work those gems in the middle, but putting a city in there would be a big waste - there are 5 unused tiles though. Ravenna is building a theater to expand the borders - I'll chop that last forest - with only 1 in the city borders it doesn't give any health benefits. Rome at Hanging Gardens due in 5.

Here's the west. Estruscan is in decent position, so I've got a few units over there waiting for it to go to size 2. At first I was sitting on the grassland, which is the city's only 2 food tile, rendering it unable to work (and therefore slowing down the growth to size 2). Then I figured that out and moved to one of the plains tiles. I will probably put one more city in the SW corner. Probably where the Praetorian is at the very bottom. Possibly one tile N - it's a tradeoff between being on the coast and having the least tiles wasted. Pisae building a barracks to pump some military.

Athens almost done with the globe theater. It's slowly growing now but that's because I've intentionally stunted growth - as you can see it already has one unhappy citizen. Once the Globe comes in, I'll revolt to Caste System and see how many scientists I can put in there. I think the FP will go in Sparta. I'm torn with another city to the W/SW of Athens - there's room but it's a lot of tundra. There's a marble resource there, but it would take 2 more Athenian expansions if I don't build another city. Though the wonders that marble helps are running out by now... On 2nd look there's still Sistine Chapel, Taj Mahal and Versailles. So maybe it is worth it.

Last night, as I laid in bed (I know I'm a loser for thinking about Civ in bed, okay?), I thought to myself, "Self. You just built the Great Lighthouse - what if you can now travel on the ocean!!?" So I looked this morning, and..... no.

Just now noticed that Cumae is not in any of the pictures. I'm sure their citizens are very sad. It just finished the Great Lighthouse and it is building a harbor at size 9.

I entered the medeival age when I finished Music I think, but I'm still not eligible to go into the first spoiler thread, since I have not yet met anybody from the other continent - I *really* hope I haven't missed a path to go through.

Preflight check:
  • Cumae - it's growing in 4 but has reached its happiness limit. Rearrange for more production and also put a scientist specialist in.
  • I double-check my aloneness as I enter go-to mode and try every square around my continent and they all get the red circle.
  • Swap Antium to Praetorian. It finishes in 5 along with its growth to 9 (limit) so it will produce 2 settlers after that.
  • Workers - There are several cities that are working several unimproved tiles. Rome has 1, Antium is working 4!, Sparta has 1, Magyar has 1 or 3 (depending on whether you count forest as unimproved) and Athens has 2 but they are being farmed as we speak. Need to prioritize workers to these cities. As I look, Antium has 2 workers already there working. We're going to need some worker power to chop down the northern jungle.
  • As I said, Antium has queued up 2 settlers, they will be used to fill the gaps in the SW and S. I checked and you can build in ice - this city will have some grass in range and deer and marble in its 21 and I think be on a river. I just can't see the benefit to founding a city in the desert between Cumae and Sparta, so I will send workers to chop those forests.
  • Research is on Metal Casting (in 5), at which point lots of folks will be put on forge (and a great engineer if possible) and Cumae will afterwards start the Colossus. After that Machinery and then Optics. I'm making 94 beakers a turn, so if you assume that will go slowly up as time goes on, we're looking at about 20-25 turns until Optics.
820 - I was named 2nd most advanced, so that's nice. Estruscan conveniently grows to size 2, so I whack it.

860 - Lots of infrastructure builds. Sparta finishes a Praet. It looks like my 6th courthouse will be done in 4, so start another praet, also due in 4.

900 - Rome Hanging Gardens->Court. It looked like it just added 1 citizen to all my cities, which, when you think about it, makes the most sense. Certainly improved my score, which went from the 1360s all the way up to 1503. 920 - Thespis born in Athens! Another great Artist, so I can't start a golden age. I will save him as well.

940 - Sparta Praet->Forbidden Palace due in 14, but that will speed up with a few chops. Revolt to Caste System, as the Globe Theater just finished (last turn) in Athens - we'll see how many specialists we can fit in there. Put 3 scientists in there for now, because I still want it to grow till it can't grow no mo'.

1020 - Luckily I send an escorting Praet down to the marble tundra because there's a barb warrior down there. He is summarily whacked.

1030 - Machinery ->Optics (due in 5). Corinth is going to build my first caravel, aided by a forest chop that I'm sending some workers to do, timed for 5 turns from now.

1040 - I turn science up to 100% to get Optics in 2 - I figure every turn counts. That puts me at -63 gpt

1050 - Settler is built - he's sent down towards the marble. I turn science down to 90% to still get Optics in 1 and actually have money left :-) 60 gold at -40 gpt.

1060 - Optics comes in. And now what? Priesthood to Monarchy for the wines is tempting, but I think I'm going to go for Astronomy. It's in 12 turns, but then I realize I have to turn down science. At 70% it's still only 14 turns so that's not bad. I really hope to be able to trade for a lot of these backwards techs. Ravenna Harbor->Caravel.

1070 - Sistine Chapel built. That's Theology

1080 - Colossus built in CUmae->Caravel. Forbidden Palace built in Sparta->Forge. At 70% I'm now +15 gpt. Arretium founded in the ice near the marble. It's going to be 49 turns for culture? Gotta do something about that. Athens culture will expand to get the marble in 9 turns.

1090 - The first caravel comes off the line and is sent east. Well, kind of north-east since I appear to be in the southern hemisphere.

1100 - And boom no more than 2 turns for the first caravel and I find Germany. I don't know if he is representative of the other powers, but this would seem to indicate I'm doing okay.

Actually he looks pretty backwards. I give him Code of Laws for Priesthood, ARchery and 10 gold. He's Hindu but not the holy city so there's got to be someone else around here. Perhaps I should have held off on trading.

1110 - Meet Monty who's at par with Bismark. Give him Code of Laws for Monarchy. Send someone to hook up the wines. He's Jewish but not the holy city so again, must be someone else.

1120 - Meet Mao to the north. He won't trade anything but he's also at parity with the other 2 AIs I've met.

1140 - Isabella is met - she won't trade anything. She is the Hindu holy city. Arpinum built by the pigs. Looks like I have only Arabia left to meet.

1160 - Great Scientist born in Athens. I could kick off a golden age. I think I will wait till I get Astronomy and can trade for some more happiness.

1180 - Astronomy comes in. Mao immediately jumps me to trade spices for dye. The other powers don't want to trade with me, but MOnty gets Metal Casting for Polytheism and Construction and Deer for Cow. Since I'm so much more powerful than any one else, I'm going to go for Islam. I need Mono and Theology. Mono will take 1 turn, though if I can find Arabia, maybe I can trade for it. With the wines hooked up and the spices in trade, I can now grow up to 11-12 happies, so I reconfigure some cities to grow some more.

1200 - Notre Dame in Pisae, which means I can grow even more. I'm still searching for Arabia.

1210 - Theology ->Divine Right.

1220 - I find Saladin. I give him Code of Laws for Horseback Riding and Corn and Silk for Ivory. I've now met everyone and umm I think I'm going to win?

Seems like a good stopping point, not to mention I'm getting some external "pressures" to stop playing :-). More later...
