Very frustrating last night. I was excited to have a possible victory
in 1640 - I thought that would definitely put me high on the list and
even possibly the "medal" for Fastest Diplomatic Victory.
But 1660 and now maybe even 1680 - not so likely. In any case, I have to make sure that I even win at the next vote in 1680. I've spent some time trying to read up on the Civ 4 Diplomatic Victory and what other people have done. Here are a few ideas. Basically it seems I need to increase my relations with Monty and/or get Monty and Mao to hate each other more.
I really don't want to have to fallback on a space race. With the friendliness that I've got with Monty, I realy *should* be able to get his vote - sheesh! I also don't want to have to deal with fighting a war to get my population up high enough. I'm to the point where it would take me a lot to get up to the point where I had enough votes without Monty. Though, in looking at things, I do need to make sure I keep growing, because I'm only a few votes ahead of 60% even WITH Monty. Okay - so preflight check. I go through all my cities and maximixe food. Mao won't declare on Montezuma, so I don't do that. Switch research from Corporation to Military Tradition (in 2). 1670 - Military Tradition comes in but I can't figure out how to sign a defensive pact...Monty is now at +11, but Bismark is down to +17 because I have a -1 "You declared war on our friend". I get him to also declare on Izzy for Nationalism, so hopefully that will go away. I also pick up Gunpowder for Paper and Banking. 1675 - Vote comes in again... I have 209 votes and winning requires 329 of 531. Monty is at +12 with me so if he doesn't vote for me I'm going to be annoyed. Well...more annoyed than I already am with him. 1680 - And the answer is...
Woohoo! An interesting tidbit from the replay - I was the first civ to build a 2nd city - I actually had 3 cities before most civs had 2 (Alex and Mao had just founded their 2nd cities when I founded Cumae) The Dan Quayle screen is somewhat ironic - I'm not sure if Julius would take that as a compliment or not :-)
By the end, Islam (discovered nearly 1700 years after the next-youngest religion) had made it to 45% of the world, compared to the next-most-prevalent religion, Hinduism, at 17%. According to the official results, I came in 41st out of 623 submissions. |
